I am planning to take alot of images in urban settings to match the urban upbringing of the large majority of my target audience. The images used will be strong and have alot of meaning behind them to reflect the target audience. The images i will use will be simmillar to the pictures above

The codes and conventions i will try to follow are the following allthough i will definatly have to ignore some for the quality and suitability of my target audience.

  • One main image
  • Image generally has direct address
  • Sometimes the main image is the background for the article, with the text on top
  • One half of the article is the main image which sometimes bleeds between pages
  • The headline is usually only a few words long
  • Headline sometimes uses stylised fonts
  • Headline used to draw in the reader as it doesn't tell them what the article is about as it is done by the stand first
  • There is a drop capital at the start of the article to show you were to start reading
  • Quotes are sometimes used in the headline, on the picture or in the stand first or to break up the text
  • Stand first introduces the article and is positioned under the headline, this also often contains the journalists name
  • There is a simple/minimal colour scheme
    Text is usually 11pt
  • Techniques to draw in the reader include: bold texts, slightly bigger type size, capitals for the first few words
  • Byline - who wrote the article and photographers credit
  • Laid out into 2-4 columns
  • Strapline at the top of the page tells you the subject matter e.g. interview
  • Article is usually written informally to appeal to the reader and therefore the personality of the journalist comes through

This is one of my favourite double page spreads as the space is well used, There is not masses of text and the images used are quite interesting. all the text on the left side have an appealing feel to them and would attrtact my target audience. I feel the colours used are well picked as they have made a scrapbook feel to the magazine wich is very interesting.

The text on the right is appropriately spaced and doesnt look hard to read i like the fact that it is not the complete focus of the page, witch i shall immatate in my double page spread.

This double page spread has alot of text in it and just two large images. The main colours are green, black and white. Ilike the simpictic feel of this spread as it is not trying to push anything in your face. not only the layout but the photos are quite simple. The name of the band is a bit small and I would like it to be a bit bigger and really stand out catching the readers eye if it where my magazine.

I Like the look of this double page spread as it is clearly aimed ata younger auidence. i like the use of the space on the left as space gives off a sense of freedom and luxury. as for the right side i feel there is way too much happening and too much text. this in my opinion would put readers off as they probably dont want to read masses off information.

i will make sure too keep the space in my magazine and keep text to a minimum also avoiding grouping it together.

These are some ideas of what i would like my contents page to look like. I feel that all three have a certain element of a modern/urban enviroment and gives off the feel thatr they are for younger readers about 16 too 25. i will try to design my contents page around these three images and will also take note of colours used.

i will make sure that the images i will use have the same effect the scater for example has on the top left image as it connitates freedom and youth. Freedom and Youth, in my oppinion connect with the style of music i have chosen revy well.

magazine evaluation

This magazine is clearly aimed at young university students. In my opinion I think that this magazine suits its audience very well as its visuals are clearly suited for the age group yet shows a high degree of intelligence, which I feel fits the audience well.
The graffiti speaks to the reader and the message is very encouraging and cool. The overall look of the magazine is professional and looks influenced by art.

The language on the front cover seems informal witch would appeal to the young audience
The text “the green issue” implies that allot university students are environmentally friendly. The background is also an urban setting witch again implies the place that students may live.

music genre

The genre of music my magazine is aimed at is drum & bass and dub step. My audience will appreciate low controlled bass and fast connecting bass lines. The readers usually seek adrenaline or relaxation from their music. Artists such as Pendulum, Borgore, Rusko, sub focus, prodigy, noisia, chase and status, netsky, benga , burial and trending YouTube artists.

Font ideas

These are potential ideas for fonts I
Could use in my magazine. I think that the fonts Juice, Disko, BIRTH OF A HERO, alba matter and EL&Fonts would be most appropriate
Due to their urban and modern feel. I feel that the font birth of a hero would be a very good title font but not very practical as the font for an article as it is easy to read but still keeps the style I am looking for.

simmilar magazines

ATM is the world’s longest running mag for Drum & Bass. I am hoping to create a similar style with my magazine as it is aimed at a similar target audience and music. The overall look of this magazine is professional and modern. The text gives it an urban feel and the colours on each issue go very well.
The masthead on each magazine differs in colour depending on the rest of the magazine, witch I feel is a cool twist on traditional mastheads. Another point of interest is the border above and below the magazine. I feel I may include something similar in my magazine to capture the right look.
